Nature and Sustainability: IUS Hosts SDG Talk with Biodiversity Expert Ismir Smajić

On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the IUS SDG Executive Committee, led by Assistant Professor Dr. Azra Bičo, had the pleasure of hosting MSc Ismir Smajić, Expert Advisor for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development, as a guest speaker in the latest session of the SDG Talk series. The event highlighted the vital role of community engagement, innovation, and policy in tackling conservation challenges and advancing sustainability.

In his lecture, “Protected Natural Areas as Examples of Sustainability – Biodiversity, Climate, Health, and Policy,” Mr. Smajić examined how protected areas contribute to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). Using local examples such as Bijambare and Perućica, he demonstrated the environmental, health, and policy benefits of preserving natural landscapes.

Mr. Smajić concluded with a compelling call to action, encouraging students and citizens to support protected areas, engage in environmental education, and become active advocates for nature.
